Musk Comes From the Sanskrit Word for Testicle
Musk is a strong animal scent used in perfume. Its name is anatomical and blunt.
Musk is a strong, persistent scent originally obtained from a gland of the male musk deer. The name is anatomical: Sanskrit *muṣka* means testicle, from a diminutive of *mūṣ*, a mouse, because the gland was thought to resemble one. The word travelled through Persian and Greek into Latin and then across Europe. Musk deer are now protected and almost all perfume musk is synthetic, which is why the scent is cheap today when it was once worth more than gold by weight.
- An animal scent. *A musk note.*
- Musk deer. *The musk deer.*
- Synthetic musk. *White musk.*
- Musky — smelling of musk. *Musky.*
- Sanskrit — *muṣka*. *The root.*
