Savoy Names a Cabbage, a Hotel and a Region

Savoy is a crinkle-leaved cabbage. The name comes from an Alpine region that also gave its name to a famous London hotel.

Savoy is a cabbage with crinkled, deeply veined leaves, and also the historic Alpine region straddling France and Italy. One place name produced an odd trio in English: the cabbage, the Savoy Hotel in London, and the Savoy Operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. The hotel stands on the site of the Savoy Palace, built for Peter of Savoy in the thirteenth century, and the operas were written for the theatre next door. The region was ruled by the House of Savoy, which later provided the kings of a united Italy.
