Newton Added Indigo to Make Seven Colours
A rainbow is an arc of colour formed by sunlight and water droplets. The familiar seven colours are a historical choice, not a natural boundary.
A rainbow appears when sunlight is refracted, reflected and refracted again inside water droplets. The spectrum is continuous, so the number of colours is a matter of naming. Newton settled on seven and inserted *indigo* partly to match the seven notes of a musical scale, which is why generations have struggled to see it.

A compound of *rain* and *bow*, in use since Old English. The colour names Newton used in 1704 are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
Why seven colours?
Because Newton chose seven, partly to parallel the seven notes of the diatonic scale. The spectrum itself has no natural divisions.
Can you reach the end of a rainbow?
No. Its position depends on where you stand, so it moves as you do. It is an optical effect, not an object.
