Protein is a nutrient and a class of molecules doing most of the work in cells. Its name comes from the Greek for first or primary.

The name is a claim: it was coined in 1838 from Greek *proteios*, of first importance, because chemists suspected these substances were the fundamental material of life. They were not far wrong.

Guidelines commonly suggest around 0.75 to 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight a day for adults, with more for athletes and older people.
